Fashionable Family Friday: This One’s Mine!

December 12, 2014

It’s not quite the night before Christmas, and Sister L has claimed the striped package for her own.  Sister S appears to be be expressing a difference of opinion.  I, on the other hand, have chosen to ignore the controversy.

This reindeer, which resides in our neighborhood, has to be at least ten feet tall.  It must be reserved for when Santa needs a super-sized ride.

Brown thrashers usually spend their time on the ground in the underbrush and shrubs rooting around for their meal.  This fellow, however, keeps showing up at the feeder outside our window, obviously enjoying the easy pickin’s of a quick snack.

I got a super-cool bike that year!  Games!  Toys!  Gifts upon gifts from Santa!

Now look at that face!  Really?!!  I can’t believe that’s the best I could do on Christmas morning.

While visiting Santa Fe, H and I couldn’t help but notice that the doors and window frames on many of the homes were painted various shades of gorgeous, rich blues.  I later learned that this color is reputed to keep evil from entering.

H and I spent a delightful afternoon walking the trails at our favorite nature center.  The sights along the way never fail to inspire me.

The Clash

I believe this was supposed to be a semi-formal picture of my sisters and me, but the clashing plaid and floral patterns take the edge off.  I don’t know what’s up with Sister L and the sock monkey.

Not a Bicycle

This Melmac serving platter, which has been in our family for almost fifty years, will grace the Thanksgiving table once again.  Its colors used to be bright and bold, its surface pristine.  I won it when I was a child, but no matter how exciting that might have been, it was certainly not the prize I had hoped for.  Let me explain…

I can remember accompanying my mom to the local Winn-Dixie where the store was having a giveaway — a treasure chest filled with unmarked envelopes containing prizes, one of which was a bicycle.  Shoppers received a key upon entering, and if it opened the chest, an envelope was yours for the choosing.  It happened to be my lucky day, or so I thought.

I was elated when my key opened the lock, and I knew in that moment that the bike was going to be mine.  Imagine my emotions when the envelope that I had so carefully selected revealed the prize you see in the picture.  Totally distraught, I cried for the rest of the shopping trip.  Mom was able to console me somewhat with a bag of Keebler Danish Wedding Cookies. (I still enjoy them to this day.)

I love the tale of the turkey platter (probably because I’m the star) but mostly because it still makes me laugh after all these years.

H and I passed by this colorful array of ceramic pumpkins and turkeys while in Santa Fe… a perfect display for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Fashionable Family Friday: Chillin’

I’m not sure if we’re coming or going, but we all look pretty relaxed — except for Sister L, who appears to be a bit squeezed.
